The Media Commissioner Institute is an independent non-profit organization with the following strategic goals:
- To support development and reform of media legislation and to provide legal assistance to players in the media sector
- To reinforce the values of mass media as a resource which works for the citizens of our country – citizens who as media consumers also have a right to participate in formation of media policy
- The development of new models for relations between the mass media and information consumers by means of mediation, development of a system for self-regulation of mass media issues, creation of a platform for the exchange of opinions, and an improved legal culture in the field of information law.
In its activities the Media Commissioner Institute:
- is premised on the supremacy of law
- serves the media community and citizens of the country
- strives to prevent conflicts between information users and the mass media
Main goals and tasks
- Assistance in guaranteeing the protection of information rights, freedoms and legal interests of mass media bodies, journalists, citizens and organizations and support for the realization and restoration of violated information rights, freedoms and legal interests of mass media, journalists, citizens and organizations.
- Public education of the need to protect, recognize and observe information rights, freedoms and legal interests of mass media, journalists, citizens and organizations.
- Development and reform of legislation regulating the activities of mass media in the KR working together with deputies, media associations and civil society organizations.
- Protection of the rights of journalist by means of public statements and ensuring legal support in cases of judicial proceedings.
- Advocacy for the interests of mass media in the government, parliament, other state bodies and departments, NGOs and other organizations.
- Providing legal assistance to mass media by consultations with staff media experts, aiding the defense of journalists and mass media before judicial bodies, and use of mediation and law in arbitration courts for out-of-court resolution of conflicts in the area of mass media.
- Development of international and local cooperation between organizations operating in the area of mass media to ensure the information rights, freedoms and legal interests of mass media, journalists, citizens and organizations.
- Organization of conferences, round tables and other public events related to the activity of the Institute.
- Participation in educational seminars regarding legal regulation of the activity of mass media.
- Monitoring of legal proceedings related to activity of journalists and mass media.
